On October 22, 2025, Flowers for Algernon Zhixing conducted its first activity of the new year at the Changshu Special Education School, aiming to teach the children how to wrap paper boxes by themselves. During this event, all Zhixing members worked with the children to learn how to wrap presents to look like a gift box. This is not only for the children to enjoy the fun of doing their own wrapping, but more importantly, to teach them to be skillful in wrapping cartons so that they can be more independent in their daily life afterwards. Let’s take a look at what the FFA members did with the children!

Activity Process

As the members entered the classroom one after another, the children’s eyes showed excitement and doubt, and they seemed to be very much looking forward to the activities to be carried out, which also gave the members a lot of confidence to carry on with the subsequent sessions more smoothly.

At the beginning of the activity, the two teachers, Jack and Johnson, introduced themselves to the children and briefly played some interactive games to attract the children’s attention and interest. The teachers asked the children what gifts they had received and pointed to some patterns on the big screen and asked the children to tell what kind of objects they were. The children raised their little hands and answered our questions with gusto. These good feedbacks also gave the members confidence, thus making the subsequent activities go more smoothly.

After the class started, the two teachers explained the steps of wrapping the carton box to the children step by step, and asked some questions that could arouse their interest from time to time, so that the children could devote themselves to the activity. The children looked at the teachers with excitement and listened carefully to their answers. Loud replies were heard continuously and the children were encouraged and appreciated by all members of the team for each hard attempt. After being praised, the children’s faces overflowed with bright smiles and their answers became more confident.

After explaining each step, the teachers would stop and patiently guide the children, giving them plenty of time and opportunity to try on their own. Each child was tutored by at least one Zhixing member, allowing them to receive adequate help and complete the packaging successfully. “I’m done!” “I’m done!” Whenever a child shouted out such words, everyone would give them the most sincere appreciation and applause, and the smiles on the children’s faces became more confident and sunny.

After all the children had finished their wrapping, the members then asked them to write or draw what they wanted to say on a piece of paper to give to the person they were going to give the gift to. The children carefully wrote down what they wanted to say, and some of them drew some cute patterns. When they were finished, each child proudly displayed their results and happily gave their gifts to their parents.

Summary and Reflection

FFA Zhixing The vibrant classroom carried out this time not only allowed the children to experience the fun of wrapping in the process of the activity, but also helped them learn the basic life skills of wrapping cartons. It was also a great opportunity to boost the children’s self-confidence and improve their daily communication and cooperation skills. We hope that these skills will help the children to be more convenient and independent in their subsequent life, so that they no longer need to rely on others.
