“Kids, are you all ready? How about we sing the waste sorting song together one more time?”

On October 30,2023, Flowers for Algernon (FFA) Zhixing held an event introducing waste sorting at the Changshu Special Education School. We were fortunate to have over 20 kids learning about waste sorting with us. The adorable children gathered in a semicircle in front of the podium, eagerly raising their hands to answer questions under the guidance of the young teachers, learning about waste sorting joyfully and effectively.

As time progresses, recycling and waste sorting have become popular topics, and people are increasingly aware of environmental issues around them. The activity of waste sorting itself is a practical process where children can cultivate a sense of responsibility and achieve a sense of accomplishment, thereby developing their social skills and confidence. This provides them with an opportunity to participate in protecting ourshared home-Earth.

What is Waste Sorting and the Waste Sotring Song?

At the beginning of the event, we introduced the concept of waste sorting to the children. Through a video, we explained the definition and significance of waste sorting. The video mentioned that without waste sorting, harmful substances can enter the soil, and valuable materials cannot be recycled, leading to Earth becoming a “garbage” planet. The children quickly grasped this concept, actively answering questions related to the video during the Q&A session. lt was clear they were eager to learn more about waste sorting!

Next, we explained the different types of waste and their corresponding colorsof the bins. The children demonstrated an impressive ability to learn, quickly mastering how to sort waste, and after a while each child could accurately identify and name all the types of waste represented by the different colored bins.

After that, we taught the children a waste sorting song: “Blue for recycling, redis toxic and harmful, green for leftovers, gray for others.” We used the melody from “Finding Friends,” making the song catchy and easy to remember. The enthusiasm of the children surprised us, and in this joyful atmosphere, we began the day’s waste sorting games.

Rainbow Card Sorting Challenge

First, we played the Rainbow Card Sorting game. In this activity, the children were divided into different groups, each with cards representing four types of waste bins. After explaining the game rules to each child, we presented various types of waste on a slide show, such as plastic bottles, batteries, banana peels etc. The children quickly found the correct waste bin cards for each item, showcasing their sorting skills and understanding of the origins of different types of waste. Through this process, they reinforced their knowledge of waste sorting and practiced teamwork by communicating with their group members.

Waste Sorting Challenge

Next, we continued with the Waste Sorting Challenge. At the start of the activity, each child received cards depicting different types of waste, such as paint, banana peels, bottles, plastic containers, ceramic figures, books, etc. Our members each held a card representing a different waste bin, and the children took turns sorting their waste cards into the appropriate bins. Some children quickly sorted the waste into the correct bins and eagerly requested more waste cards to sort. Other children sorted all their waste cards withguidance from our members. The total time taken by the children was much shorter than we planned! After the activity, they took home these adorable waste cards as souvenirs. Throughout the process, the children significantly enhanced their independent problem-solving skills and used the skills they learned in real-life situations.

Summary & Reflection

Through this activity, we helped the children learn the basics of waste sorting and fostered their sense of responsibility, confidence, teamwork, and independent thinking through games and interaction. In the future, we hope to reinforce their learning through more diverse activities and encourage them to adapt waste sorting concepts into their daily lives, contributing to environmental protection. We also created teaching videos and posters on waste sorting for more children to learn from.
