Multicultural Art: Building Connection Through Cultural Festive Activities
On December 1st, students from UWCCSC FFA Zhixing visited the Changshu Special Education School for the event “Building Growth Bridges for Children in Hearing-Impaired Families.” Students from multiple countries brought their own national traditions and cultural arts to the school. The children at the special education school spent a wonderful time filled with laughter and joy. Through activities like the music session, mini-theater, and gift sharing, the children and UWC students built a communication bridge, allowing diverse cultures to gently permeate the corners of Changshu.
Cultural Exchange Music Session
The event began with a “Jam Session,” injecting joy and energy into the room. During this segment, the children were introduced to Greek dance, English songs, and a guitar performance. Each song, rich in regional character and easy to sing along to, seemed to transport everyone to different parts of the world, allowing them to experience the charm of various cultures.
The first song was brought by Melina from Greece. She first led us to learn the Greek alphabet and experience the unique flavor of Greek culture. The pronunciation and appearance of Greek letters are very different from English letters, so most of the children were interested in the Greek alphabet for the first time, Melina patiently taught them the pronunciation one by one, and the children followed and imitated them attentively, and they mastered the basic rules of pronunciation in a short time. Afterwards, the classroom was filled with singing and laughter as the children followed Melina and sang a cheerful Greek alphabet song.

Next, Abigail from Kenya led the students into a world filled with love and joy. As the familiar tunes played, many CSC members joined in the chorus, adding even more energy to the performance. Abigail passionately sang two popular English songs, “Happy” and “Love Story.” Both were light, cheerful, and well-known, having spread across the streets and alleys of the world. Driven by her, students who knew the songs hummed softly, and those who were not familiar with them followed the melody and used simple dance steps or clapped their hands to beat the beat, sending support and encouragement to Abigail on the stage. The magic of music instantly brought everyone closer, filling the whole scene with laughter and harmony.

“Love the way you walk down dark alleys alone, love the way you don’t kneel, love the way you’ve confronted despair and refused to cry a single tear!” . This classic Chinese song is the children’s “war song”. Guitarist John played and sang “Lonely and Brave” for the students and won a round of applause, with many students joining in the singing with great passion.

At the end of the music session, Melina taught everyone a Greek dance. Holding hands, everyone counted the beats and formed a circle to dance together, enjoying the moment. As the rhythm gradually picked up, some steps became a bit out of sync, but everyone kept holding hands, trying their best to stay with the rhythm.

Body Language Mini-Theatre
The Music Fair ended with the children laughing and the Body Language Mini-Theatre was about to begin. The students were divided into two groups, with one student from each group choosing a theme and a location. Coincidentally, the two representatives coincidentally chose “The End of the World” and “The Laboratory”. So the two groups started a drama discussion around the scenario of “the laboratory at the end of the world”.
The children were excitedly engaged in assigning roles and plotting. Some proposed to play the role of a scientist who saves the world, some wanted to be a robot assistant in the lab, and some had the bright idea of portraying an unexpected villain. In the brainstorming discussion, there was a lot of laughter, and the children, who were strangers to each other, quickly integrated into the atmosphere of collective creation. What kind of amazing storyline will be born? Everyone is looking forward to this unique “laboratory” adventure!

The children were intensely discussing the play
After a brief plot idea, host Yolanda announced an additional challenge. Next, each team was given a line, which was
“Why you?”
“It’s him!”
Each group had and could only have this one line in their mini-theater, and any portion beyond that had to be presented through physical movement. The two groups of students began their rehearsals in earnest, and the story of the apocalyptic “zombie crisis” gradually took shape. ……
During the performance, the students showed their unique acting talent, utilizing rich body language to present the exciting story of the mini-theater with difficulty but integrity. Through their silent movements and expressions, they vividly conveyed the crisis and emotions of the doomsday lab to the audience. This challenge made every participant deeply realize that it is not easy to express a story using body language. In the absence of verbal communication, the slightest omission could lead to ambiguity and misunderstanding.

Students in rehearsal
Because of this, many students realized the importance of communication after the event. Communication is not only the transmission of information, but also the bridge of interpersonal relationship. Whether in the family or among friends, more communication, more understanding and more sincerity will lead to more love and trust. As this activity has inspired, good communication is the cornerstone of building harmonious relationships, while sincere interaction is the key to enhancing mutual recognition.

After the performance, the children excitedly returned to their seats, their faces full of joy, with sweat mixed with smiles. Outside the window, the leaves fell and the chill of winter mingled with the breeze, but the warmth of the classroom filled the air. As autumn transitioned into early winter and Christmas approached, Ronja from Germany shared the unique Christmas traditions of her home country.
In Germany, where Christmas is the most important holiday of the year and is celebrated for almost the entire month of December, Ronja introduces the ritualistic “Advent Calendar”, where each day from December 1 until Christmas Day, a small gift is given to a family member or friend, for a total of 25 days of gifts to keep the holiday season full of warmth and anticipation. On St. Nicholas Day, December 6, children leave clean shoes on the doorstep the night before, and those who behave well will find them filled with sweets and gifts the next morning; naughty children may receive a twig (“Rute”) to remind them to behave. “) to remind them to correct their bad habits.

At the end of the day, the students from UWCCSC gave out some postcards and hand-drawn Christmas-themed cards to the children as souvenirs, and many of them expressed their sadness and hope to see them again in the future! Parents and teachers also exchanged ideas with the students and expressed their love for the program and the difficulties that able-bodied children from deaf families are facing in their studies and lives. They hoped that more people would pay attention to these children and looked forward to more activities in the future.

Many children held the cards tightly and reluctantly said goodbye to the students, while parents and teachers also engaged in sincere conversations with the UWC students. They not only expressed their love for the activity, but also talked about the challenges faced by able-bodied children in deaf families in their studies and lives. All of them hoped that through such activities, more people would understand these children and pay attention to the growth and needs of such children.
